Federal Tax Credit for High Efficiency Air Conditioners
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 allows homeowners the opportunity to receive a tax credit of up to $1,500 for purchasing and installing energy efficient products such as air conditioners. The deadline to take advantage of this tax credit opportunity is December 31, 2010, so act now while you still can! Each product category has different requirements to qualify for the tax credit and different methods for calculating the credit. For air conditioners, the credit is calculated as 30% of the total cost of the air conditioner (plus labor and installation costs) up to $1,500. Split system air conditioners and packaged air conditioners must meet a minimum energy efficiency ratio (EER) and a minimum seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER). Split systems must meet a minimum EER of 13.00 and a SEER of 16.00, while packaged units must meet a minimum EER if 12.00 and a SEER of 14.00. To qualify, the home must be the homeowner's principal address and it must be installed for an existing home. New construction and rentals do not qualify for the tax credit. |
