Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity uses the mortgage payments from homeowners to build more homes, while donations of materials, land and labor make mortgage payments affordable.
Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization that has built over 350,000 homes all around the world. Through a powerful volunteer force, they have provided more than 1.75 million people with safe, affordable shelter. People of diverse backgrounds, races, religions and countries have banded together to volunteer their efforts to build homes for families in need.
Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1976 by Millard Fuller and his wife, Linda. Volunteers from around the world have contributed to Habitat for Humanity's mission of providing decent, affordable housing to those in need, including President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn.
Recipients do not receive hand-outs with Habitat for Humanity. Instead, housing recipients make a down payment, make affordable monthly mortgage payments and invest hours of their own time, which they call "sweat equity", into building their home and the homes of others.
